BHP Billiton: Port, Rail Operations At Port Hedland Recommencing

SYDNEY — BHP Billiton Ltd. said Friday its iron-ore port and rail operations at Port Hedland in Western Australia state are recommencing, after work was suspended Thursday when a contractor was crushed by a crane.

In a statement, BHP said it expects its facility at Port Hedland to be operating as normal by Friday afternoon local time.

BHP relies on Port Hedland, the world’s second-largest iron-ore port after the terminals at Sao Luis in Brazil, to ship the steelmaking ingredient to fast-growing countries across Asia. BHP exports around 155 million metric tons of iron ore annually from Port Hedland, more than a third of Australia’s exports of the commodity.
